Back    Nopalea pad exuding a toothpaste-like mass of mucilage cells from canals that run parallel to the vascular bundles. Almost all opuntias with flat pads have these canals, but many times there is not oozing of cells when the pads are cut, at other times the mass comes out quickly. In some species, there are very large numbers of calcium oxalate druses mixed in with the mucilage cells.
