Back    Mammillaria crest. There is only a single shoot apical meristem here: it is probably several feet wide in one direction, but only a few hundred micrometers wide in the other. Despite such an abnormal shape, it continues to produce leaf primordia and shoot tissues with no trouble. This type of crest is rather common in cacti -- perhaps it is related to the unusually large size of ordinary apical meristems in this family?
