Back    Espostoa lanata shoot cut through the cephalium level. Notice that the cephalium area has no chlorophyll, the cortex has grown very little, and even the pith expanded so little that the "ring" of vascular bundles is an oval. Trichomes are extremely abundant, and it appears that in the cephalium, every epidermis cells becomes a trichome -- none develops into guard cells.
