Back    Pterocactus valentinii, root xs. Almost all parts of this image are ray parenchyma cells (the parts that glisten). The axial tissues -- which contain vessels but no fibers in this species -- are the narrow white areas. In most regions, the axial portion of the wood is only one or two vessels wide.
