'Smallpox -- The Death of a Disease'

Dr. D. A. Henderson shares the inside story of 'the greatest scientific and humanitarian achievement of the past century'

more about our keynote speaker »

quote 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox --the most devastating disease known to man -- and the only disease ever to have been eradicated. It was achieved through the heroic work of health staff from more than 70 countries working together under the World Health Organization banner. The victory required overcoming every imaginable obstacle -- civil war, floods, famines, kidnapping of teams, dearth of funds, horrendous bureaucratic hurdles, cold war animosities.
However, ingenuity, dedication, and arduous work brought an end to smallpox in just over 10 years. There is much to be learned from its saga.   - Dr. D. A. Henderson
