Luncheon with Public Health Professionals*

11:30 am - 1 pm at Santa Rita Room (3.502): Rethinking Health

Eduardo Sanchez, MD, MPH, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas; former Commissioner, Texas Department of State Health Services; former Director, Institute for Health Policy, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health

Join faculty and advisors from Central Texas and around the country for lunch with federal, state and local public health professionals. Dr. Sanchez will address the importance of wellness initiatives in healthcare.

7:45 am: Breakfast, Welcome and Introductions

8:15 am: Advising for Careers in Public Health – The Good News and the Bad News

Dr. Bill Harvey, Emeritus Professor of Biology and Chief Health Advisor, Earlham College and NAAHP Liaison to The Association of Schools of Public Health, will discuss the explosion of interest in careers in public health among undergraduates and the implications and challenges of advising these students as they look at post-graduate public health education and training.

9:15 am: Why I Chose Graduate Education in Public Health

Student representatives and recent graduates from top programs in public health will share their experiences and excitement about attending graduate schools of public health.

10:30 am: Dual Degrees in the Practice of Public Health

Meet public health professionals who pursued dual degrees (e.g. Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health (MD/MPH)), and currently work in public health practice and public health education.

Scientific Conference and Exhibits (12 pm – 8 pm)

12 pm: Kick off Presentation and Luncheon; Exhibit Hall Opens

Global Health Equals Global Prosperity: Eduardo Sanchez, MD, MPH

1 pm - 4 pm: Afternoon Scientific Presentationschoose from three presentations per hour

Presentations of special interest to advisors:

  • Ready to Take the Next Step? Graduate Education in Public Health
    Admissions directors from four schools of public health and SOPHAS, the public health application service, will present information about how to apply to graduate schools of public health.

  • CSI: Public Health – Tackling Emerging Diseases and More in the Laboratory
    Laboratorians and laboratory educators will present information about educational programs and fellowships in public health laboratory science.

  • “Beating Back the Devil” – The CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service
    Current and former EIS officers share their experiences and provide information about applying for the program.

  • Working in Global Health - Career Pathways
    Panelists will discuss the professional training and background required to develop a career in global public health.

 

5 pm: KEYNOTE SESSION: Smallpox: The Death of a Disease

D.A.Henderson, MD, MPH, Resident Scholar, Center for Biosecurity, University of Pittsburg Medical Center; Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Service Professor and Dean Emeritus, School of Public Health.

Dr. Henderson will relate his experiences leading the World Health Organization’s international effort to eradicate smallpox from the globe.

6:30 pm: Pizza Dinner
