Long-term Trends in Biodiversity

Lyell curves for different faunas.

The rate of speciation and extinction are strongly related to the level and degree of environmental changes. Terrestrial habitats are less predictable and are more prone to greater and more abrupt changes then aquatic habitats, and thus extinctions occur at a higher rate. It is not clear, however, why the number of mammalian families remains relatively constant after an initial steep increase.
