The Atlas of the Vascular Flora of Wyoming is a mapping project based upon the effort to capture specimen label data from the collections of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM). Locality data from approximately 198,000 specimens has been georeferenced to about 9000 localities based upon Public Land Survey System (PLSS) township, range, and section. Using the database in conjunction with ArcView 3.0a (a GIS program by ESRI) and Adobe Acrobat 3.0, maps of species distribution have been produced for all taxa currently in the database.
The maps are freely available for viewing or downloading as Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (.pdf) files. Viewing the maps requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or better, which may be downloaded compliments of Adobe.
Maps may be viewed by selecting taxa from a checklist. The checklist is arranged by major plant division (Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms), and alphabetically by family, genus and species within those groups. A family list and a list of genera in alphabetic order can also be used to find taxa of interest. Remember, you can use the Find function of your browser to quickly locate text in the page.
PLEASE NOTE: The species distributions represented by these maps are based solely upon data from the Wyoming Specimen Database as of August 10, 1998. Some taxa were revised later as the maps were reviewed. For many taxa, these records represent recent collections and do not include the majority of collections in the RM, and thus the full range of the species may not be well represented, even if its presence is adequately documented in the herbarium. The absence of a taxon in a particular area does not imply that it does not occur there, only that it has not been collected there. Further, the exact placement of localities on the map is inexact due to several factors and possible sources of error, but is adequate for the purpose of describing the geographic range of a taxon within the state. Moreover, these data have not been rigorously checked, and errors both in taxon identification as well as location may exist. These data are presented here for informational purposes only. The University of Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain Herbarium accept no liability for the misuse of this data for purposes other than that intended, and reserve all rights. The Rocky Mountain Herbarium will gladly receive any corrections if errors are noted; please contact the Curator.
