Current Holistic Goal
~
Dick & Pat Richardson

These pages are given as an example of how our Holistic Goal has changed over time. As with anyone's goal, the words are deeply meaningful to those who developed it. These revisions illustrate clarifications in our minds about what we meant. The changes were incorporated after months of using the goal without much thought about the need for clarification. Something focused our combined attention on some aspect of our goal that indicated that it was incomplete, internally inconsistent, or imprecise in what it meant to us. These are not editorial changes, but deep with content. No word is written without thought about what it means to us, and each word continues to be examined. It is the process of discovery about ourselves that powers the changes.

After thoroughly reviewing and using our goal for several years, we decided that we would like to change its style. We have recast the contents of the previous style into statements that have a satisfying "ring" in our hearts.

Quality of Life
  • We live a life that nurtures excellent physical, spiritual and ecological health for ourselves and all species.
  • We have an intimate personal relationship that is built upon understanding, love, time together, and a balance of activities that generate creativity and synergy.
  • We have life-long learning through a fulfilling occupation and through a diversity of opportunities and perspectives to share with people and places.
  • We have a local and global community of close, caring, passionate friends that nurture and support creativity and synergy.
  • We enjoy family both as friends and as kin.
  • We live in peace with financial security, freedom of choice and with social and ecological equity.

We Must Produce:

  • Increased awareness of all kinds of organisms small and large and of the interconnectedness and dependence of our life cycles;
  • Available healthful air, water, soil and food;
  • Time together for work, travel, relaxation and healthful activities;
  • Opportunities for intimate time on the land;
  • Profit from fulfilling work;
  • Shared curiosity, knowledge, passion and creativity;
  • Awareness, communication, understanding and harmony.

Resources Necessary to Achieve and Sustain Our Goal Include:

  • A healthy regional foodshed and watershed (exhibits biodiversity of life above and below ground, clear clean perennial streams and rivers, clean well water and rising water tables);
  • Supportive, open-minded, trusting community (with people who understand their connection to, and their dependence upon the ecosystem);
  • Comfortable place to live (warm, hospitable, with harmony and reflections of our relationship);
  • Healthy ecosystem capitalizing on the synergy of relationships that support us;
  • High level of technology with respect to communication and transportation;
  • Many skills and deep wisdom;
  • Personal capabilities and adequate time.
