Location:
The City:

Guadalajara was founded in the early 1500s. It is rich in history and Mexican traditions, including its distinction as the birthplace of Mariachi music. In colonial times Guadalajara was the capital of New Galicia, which extended north to California. Today the metropolitan area has a population of well over 4 million.

Guadalajara is one of Mexico's most beautiful and vibrant modern cities. Some of the country’s finest arts and crafts are produced and marketed in and around the city. Guadalajara is home to several excellent universities, including the Universidad de Guadalajara.

The University of Guadalajara (La Universidad de Guadalajara):
Founded in 1792, the University of Guadalajara is the second largest university in Mexico, with a total student population of 200,000. The University has colleges spread throughout the city and metropolitan region, each specializing in a different area of study. Participants in this program take courses in two locations: CEPE and CUCS.

CEPE (Centro de Estudios Para Extranjeros):
The language school for foreign visitors was founded in 1948 and currently serves an average of 2,500 students per year. Courses in Spanish language and literature are taught at various levels, depending on student needs and interests. Mexican culture and history courses are also offered. Although a small teaching center, CEPE offers a variety of services for foreign students.

CUCS (Centro Universitario de Ciencias de Salud):
The medical school is a large publicly-operated teaching institution and hospital supported by the State of Jalisco. It is a diverse medical facility that includes programs of study in medicine, dentistry, nursing, psychology, nutrition and physical education.

Hospital Civil de Guadalajara:
Founded in 1794, this historic hospital together with a new adjacent facility serve the uninsured population, offering 1,650 beds and all medical specializations.  HCiM students complete observation internships in selected departments.
