Summer Structure, Dates, and Costs:
Health Care in Mexico (HCiM) offers qualified undergraduates a truly unique
opportunity to gain firsthand experience in health care training, while
carrying out an immersion study aboard experience in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Onsite, students will interact directly with doctors, other health care
professionals, and medical students in the teaching hospital of the
University of Guadalajara (CUCS).
This rigorously rewarding program provides students the opportunity to
simultaneously develop knowledge in practical healthcare, Mexican culture,
and the Spanish language. Prospective participants should posses
academic credentials in basic sciences and some proficiency in spoken
Spanish. The program's nine weeks break into two components:
Component 1
During the first five weeks of the program, students will take two courses
in Spanish language and Mexican history/culture at the University of
Guadalajara language center (CEPE).
Students spend approximately half of each weekday in class. For these
courses, students my transfer six hours of academic credit to UT Austin.
Component 2
The second part of the program takes place at the teaching hospital (CUCS).
Students interact with advanced Mexican Medical students in a four-week
hospital rotation. Although HCiM students do not diagnose or treat
patients, nor perform invasive procedures, they do interact with medical
students during hospital rounds. Students also meet weekly with a
medical professional in an informing setting, where they learn proper
protocol for medical professionals and become familiar with medical Spanish
terminology. HCiM students should expect to spend at least four hours
per day at the teaching hospital. Successful completion of this
component allows students to transfer thee hours of academic credit to UT
Austin.
