From Full Circle exhibition:
"You have noticed that everything and Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. The Sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours...
Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves"
-Black Elk Ogalala Sioux Holy Man 1863-1950
Because of her influence and her guidance, my ceramic work is dedicated to Mrs. Martha Gillespie, my grandmother, who taught me ceramics from a very young age. Her pottery reflects a Native American style that has come to highly influence my work as a ceramic artist. I have tried to keep natural forms and designs from native cultures a theme in my work. Also, being a student of biology and environmental studies, I have a high regard for the health and well-being of the Earth's ecosystems and habitats. I believe that the consequences of human action toward our environment will come back, full circle, to affect us (and indeed, some already have). Some believe that humans are separate from nature, but we are very much a part of it and continue to affect it and be affected by it. All of my ceramic works are made of earth, or things growing from it. This is why I have chosen a quote by Dr. Albert Schweitzer, a writer, philosopher and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, to help title this show:
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace"
