Development of Wings from Drosophila Eyes

This review (1MB) appeared in Science News on July 13, 1996, (vol. 150:22) and shows how imaginal discs (fundamental units of development in insects) can develop in unusual locations. The loci with all the necessary alleles are in cells of the eyes so that, when conditions are appropriately modified, they can become active. The wings that have developed have not expanded, but they are fully formed. Similar sets of loci have been identified in other organisms, even mammals, that control the development of limbs.
