Genetically Active Dioxins Accumulate

This review (0.42MB) appeared in Science News on June 22, 1996, (vol. 149:390) and shows how we continue to add massive amounts of harmful chemicals to our environment. Dioxins are among the most potent chemicals known that affect gene regulation. They can cause severe developmental mis-regulation, as well as kill cells in higher concentrations. They are produced as a byproduct of burning chlorinated organic chemicals, either intentionally as in waste disposal by inceneration, and unintentionally as in the manufacture of many compounds.
