Leaves - are these leaves simple or compound? How would you tell this leaves apart from those of Fraxinus texensis? inflorescences - these are the clusters of female flowers

habit and bark - this tree is found alongside rivers and streams. The bark is deeply furrowed. these fruits (samaras) are winged around the fruit for dispersal.  Notice that the wing extends along the fruit - this character helps distinguish this species from others (F. texensis, F. americana) in the same genus

 
Opposite leaves - all members of the Oleaceae family have opposite leaves.  The axillary buds at the petiole base denote the pinnately compound leaf.
