habit - this species of Gaillardia grows in open vegetation on sandy soils leaf and attachment - are these leaves petiolate or sessile? What kind of leaf arrangement is present?

head - the ligules of the ray flowers may be red at the base (as above) or they may be almost completely yellow (as in habit photo). The corollas of the disc flowers give the disc the distinctive brown-purple coloration.

phyllaries - the phyllaries are retrorse, turned downward from the receptacle

developing fruits in Summer--in Gaillardia, the disk becomes spherical after the fertilization of the disk flowers
